How to put YouTube chat on stream and run chat games
StreamSlayers · Updated September 25, 2026 · 10 min read · Works with OBS, Streamlabs, Meld & evmux
MVP BETAEarly access. Free for every Pro Slayer during the beta, until October 15, 2026. After that, Chat Highlight and the chat games become part of MVP Slayer, our new top tier, coming soon.
Beta allowance: 4 hours of live chat a day, reset at midnight UTC.
Your chat is the best part of your stream — so put it on the stream. Chat Highlight takes any message from your YouTube live chat and puts it on screen in a broadcast-grade graphic with one click, Super Chats included. The chat games turn that same chat into a studio audience: trivia with a live leaderboard, This or That votes, a giveaway wheel, Who Am I and more — your viewers play just by typing.
Everything runs from one console page and two OBS browser sources. There's nothing to install, no YouTube account to connect and no API key: paste your live stream's link and go. Setup takes about ten minutes, and you can rehearse the whole thing with test messages before you ever go live.
What you'll need
- OBS Studio, Streamlabs, Meld, evmux or XSplit — anything with a browser source
- A Pro Slayer plan — the beta is included until October 15, 2026 — view plans
- A YouTube live stream with live chat turned on (public or unlisted)
Open Chat Highlight + Chat Games
From your dashboard, click LAUNCH on Chat Highlight + Chat Games. Everything lives on this one page: the chat, the games, the designs and your question library.
Add the two browser sources to OBS
At the top of the page, under the beta note, is OBS BROWSER SOURCES. Chat highlights and games are separate graphics, so each gets its own source:
- Click COPY next to Chat Highlight · 16:9 (2). In OBS: Sources → + → Browser, paste it, and set the size to 1920 × 1080.
- Do the same with Games · 16:9 (3). Put the games source above the chat source if you want a game to cover a highlight.
- Streaming vertical? Use the 9:16 links (4) on a 1080 × 1920 canvas instead — same graphics, laid out for Shorts-style streams.
Both sources are transparent until something is on screen. If you add both the 16:9 and the 9:16 games links, only one of them plays the game music and sound effects — pick which with GAME SOUND PLAYS FROM (5), so nothing ever plays twice.
Connect your live chat
On the LIVE tab, paste your YouTube live stream's URL — or just its video id — into the box (1) and press GO LIVE (2). Chat starts arriving in a second or two.
The ring (3) shows how much of today's 4 hours of live chat you've used. It counts in 5-minute blocks while a console window is live, resets at midnight UTC, stops while you PAUSE, and listening stops by itself when your stream's chat ends — so a console left open overnight never burns tomorrow's time.
POP OUT (4) opens the same console in its own window for a second monitor. The two windows stay in step — whatever you put on stream in one shows in the other — and a CHAT button in the top bar brings the pop-out back from any other app page.
Put a chat message on stream
Click any message in the LIVE CHAT panel (1) and it's on stream. Click it again — or HIDE — to take it down. The OBS OUTPUT preview (2) is the real graphic, on a transparent background, exactly as your browser source draws it.
- Filter the panel to PAID, MEMBERS or MODS when chat is moving fast.
- Super Chats, Super Stickers and memberships arrive with their amount and can be shown in their own gold, green or purple treatment.
- No stream running? Use TEST MESSAGES (3) to drop fake chat into the panel and rehearse — clicking a test row goes through exactly the same path to your overlay.
Pick your design
Open the DESIGN tab. HIGHLIGHT DESIGN (2) is a gallery of looks — broadcast bars, title cards, captions, team takeovers — each shown with a real message. Pick one and the preview (3) updates as you go.
- Settings for 16:9 / 9:16 (1): placement, size and type are separate for each frame, so moving the vertical version never moves the landscape one. Colors are shared.
- Colors: use the design's own palette, pick your own, or choose Team colors for any club.
- Super Chat design: give paid messages their own look.
- Behavior: keep a highlight up until you pull it, or hide it automatically after a few seconds.
Run a chat game
The GAMES row (1) on the LIVE tab has every game. Click one to open its sheet, choose a Look (2) and Music (3), set it up, and start it (4). Your viewers play by typing in chat — the graphic tells them exactly what to type.
While a game is running, the ON AIR bar at the top of the games row shows where it is and holds its controls — reveal an answer early, go to the next round, or stop.
The games — and what viewers type
- Intro — opening titles for your show in six looks (Arcade, Big type, Studio slate, Trading card, VHS tape, On-air studio), for a set time or until you take it off. No chat needed.
- Trivia — four answers, live vote bars and a countdown; the faster a right answer, the more it scores, with a leaderboard along the bottom. Viewers type A, B, C or D (or 1–4).
- Who Am I — a hidden player gets clearer with every clue. Viewers type their guess of the player's name; the last name alone works, and close spellings count.
- This or That — a head-to-head vote with a live bar. Viewers type 1 or 2 (or A or B).
- Hat Shuffle — a 3D shell game at a real ballpark: follow the ball, then chat votes. Viewers type 1, 2 or 3.
- Derby — a race where every message naming a lane pushes it forward. Viewers type a lane number or name — "go chiefs!" counts.
- Memory Match — memorize a board of cards, then match pairs. Viewers type two card numbers, like 3 12.
- Giveaway — a prize wheel or slot reel, with the winner drawn at random from everyone who entered (up to 5,000). Viewers type your keyword — !enter by default — or anything at all if you let anyone who chats in; members-only is one switch.
- Standings — the season leaderboard of points your viewers earned across the games. No chat needed.
- Credits — end-of-stream credits starring your chat: top supporters, members, mods and everyone who chatted. No chat needed.
One game is on air at a time — starting another asks before it stops the first.
Every game has several looks, and the built-in Arcade track or your own uploaded music under it. Everything is drawn for 16:9 and 9:16.
Build your own question library
The LIBRARY tab holds your Trivia questions, Who Am I rounds and This or That matchups. Each list is numbered and folds away, so a hundred questions never mean a hundred rows of scrolling — search it, or type #37 to jump straight to question 37.
- + ADD (1) a question by hand, with pictures for each answer if you like.
- IMPORT (2) a whole set from a JSON file — the preview tells you how many are ready and why any were skipped before anything is saved.
- JSON FORMAT (3) shows the exact format with a copyable example and a template to download. DOWNLOAD ALL exports your list in that same format.
- Click any numbered row (4) to edit it, move it or delete it.
The meter at the top shows how much of your library's 512 KB you've used — roughly 730 trivia questions that each have four pictures, or about 1,950 without pictures.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Who can use Chat Highlight and the chat games?
They're in beta and included with every Pro Slayer plan until October 15, 2026. After that, Chat Highlight and the chat games become part of MVP Slayer, a new top tier that's coming soon.
How much live chat can I use a day?
During the beta each account gets 4 hours of live chat listening a day, counted in 5-minute blocks while a console window is live. It resets at midnight UTC, pausing stops the clock, and listening stops on its own when your stream's chat ends.
Do I need a YouTube API key or to connect my YouTube account?
No. Paste your live stream's URL or video id and press GO LIVE — StreamSlayers reads the public live chat directly. Nothing to connect, no keys.
Does it work with Twitch or Kick?
Not yet — Chat Highlight reads YouTube live chat. The overlays themselves work in any streaming app that has a browser source: OBS, Streamlabs, Meld, evmux or XSplit.
Can I use it on a vertical (9:16) stream?
Yes. The console gives you a 9:16 link for both the chat highlight and the games, laid out for a 1080x1920 canvas, and the Design tab keeps separate placement and sizes for 16:9 and 9:16.
How many trivia questions can I save?
Your whole games library — trivia, Who Am I and This or That — is saved as one record of up to 512 KB. That's roughly 730 trivia questions that each have four pictures, or about 1,950 without pictures. The meter at the top of the Library tab shows how much you've used.
